I don't know about you, but the summer heat has me daydreaming about the cool, crisp feeling of fall. While we technically have a little more time until a new season officially begins, to me, August is just pre-fall. With kids heading back to school, it's a sign that summer's clock has expired, and it's time to bid it adieu until next year.

Along with the desire for cooler days comes a question for many: what will our fall wardrobe look like? You don't have to worry because I'm here to help. I'll share tips for making a stylish transition from summer to fall without buying a thing.

"When in doubt, add a layer." — Unknown

While we love fall, it doesn't come without its less-than-desirable elements. The most noticeable one for fall is the drastic change in temperature from day to night; it’s warm during the day and noticeably cooler when evening arrives. Understandably, this can bring about some questions when it’s time to decide how to dress for your day. Keep reading to learn how you can overcome this little problem without having to spend a dime.

  1. Rethink Your Summer Layers

Remember that light cardigan you always have for cold days in your office? Your favorite denim jacket, or what about that oversized, boyfriend button-up? These are summer staples that can be reimagined for your new favorite fall looks or just your add-on pieces for chilly evenings.

Here's how to do it:

  • Layer a light summer dress under your denim jacket.

  • Pair a light cardigan with a tank and your favorite maxi skirt.

  • Use an oversized button-front shirt as a jacket, and layer it over a dress or with a skirt and tee.

Visual Effect TIP: Layer a lightweight long-sleeve tee under your summer dress or sleeveless vest for a new look that works for fall.

  1. Let's Talk Bottoms

When the weather calls for less leg, it's time to pull out our favorite jeans. But don't just stop at denim; let's rethink those shorts you've been rocking all summer.

Here's how to do it:

  • Switch up your shoes for a fall transition; pair ankle boots or cute sneakers with your skirts and dresses for a new look.

  • Swap out your shorts for jeans to pair with your warm-weather tops.

  • Add leggings under your favorite shirtdress or tunic dress for a new, fall-ready look.

Visual Effect TIP: Tights are an easy way to transition your summer bottoms. Add a pair under your skirts, dresses, and even shorts to keep wearing those summer pieces a little longer.

  1. Get Cozy with Knits and Lightweight Sweaters

The saying goes, if you stay ready, you don't have to get ready. This is especially helpful when dressing for your day, knowing how the temperatures can change from day to night. To keep cool during the day but ready for chilly nights, weave your cool-weather items into your look.

Here's how to do it:

  • Drape a light knit over your shoulders for a cute, day look that also has you ready for night.

  • Add a fall flannel layer that you can tie around your waist and easily toss over your favorite jeans and tee when the weather calls for less.

  • Choose a cardigan in a light fabric that will help you easily transition from day to night.

Visual Effect TIP: The day-to-night transition should be easy. Choose pieces that you can be comfortable in all day that with a simple change in how you wear it, will keep you both cool and warm when needed.

Transitioning to a new season doesn't have to be a major wardrobe overhaul. By just rethinking and re-wearing what you already own, you can create a stylish and comfortable wardrobe for those cooler days. Whose Ready for Fall?!?

Now that you have these tips, it's time to dig through your closet! What summer pieces are you most excited to transform for fall? Leave a comment and share your favorite looks!
