Style Is Legacy: She Get It From Her Momma

This Mother’s Day, we pause not just to celebrate mothers—but to honor the images they gave us. The way they dressed. The way they carried themselves. The way they passed down confidence, without realizing it, through every outfit they wore.

"Style is legacy. It’s what lives on in the clothes we inherit, the rituals we repeat, and the self-assurance we carry because of the women who came before us"

The First Style Icon You Ever Knew

Before we flipped through fashion magazines or knew of Pinterest to use to find inspiration, many of us had our own, real-life style icon right in our own home. She didn’t know she was fashion royalty, but she had a way of making us feel like she was. Maybe she was just doing what came natural to her or maybe she was just doing what she saw her mother do. Whatever the reason, she had a way of pulling herself together in the morning, making something extraordinary out of the basic, leaving the house wrapped in an invisible cape of style, overflowing with power in every step.

Whether it was her Sunday church hat, her collection of gold bangles, or her “I'm bold and I'm beautiful” lipstick—our mothers, grandmothers, and aunties showed us how image wasn’t just about appearance. It was about presence.

She Taught Us: Show Up, Even When You’re Tired

Motherhood often requires putting others first—but somehow, many mothers still manage to show up for themselves. Even in the small ways they showed up for themselves—through intentional style choices—they reminded us that taking time to put yourself together, isn’t shallow—it is sacred and it’s important for the little eyes watching you.

She may have been juggling a career, raising kids, or holding the entire family together, but she still pressed her trousers. She still fixed her collar, she made up her face and she still showed up.

That’s visual strength. That's the image of endurance.

The Pieces She Passed Down

Some of us were lucky enough to inherit more than wisdom—we inherited wardrobe staples. The designer bag we secretly wished was ours every time she carried it, the pearl earrings she wore for special occasions, that special dress she pulled out when she needed that extra boost of confidence.

Those pieces carry more than just memories. They carry legacy. They remind us that style is not just what you wear—it’s the impressions the pieces you wear leave on those around you, its all the strength and character the pieces embody.

Style Lessons That Still Speak Today

As I prepared to celebrate Mother’s Day with some of the important women in my life, I asked these questions to them: What did you learn from your mother about style and what do you want to pass on to your own children. I asked them to think about both things told to them and things they learned simply from observing how their mother's moved in the world. Here are just a few of the timeless truths they shared with me:

What I learned from My Mother/Mother Figure:

  • "Modesty Isn’t Ugly: There is power in restraint”

  • “Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize ALWAYS”

  • “Fashion is subjective and always changing, you get to decide what works for you”

  • "It’s not about the label. It’s about how it makes you feel, regardless of where you buy it”

  • “Your style is your own”

🌷 This Mother’s Day, Remember This...

Your image is part of your inheritance. Your style is your stamp on the legacy passed down to you.

As you choose your outfits, walk into rooms, and express your story through style—you are honoring the women who helped shape your reflection.

Whether your mom was minimal or bold, fashion-forward or beautifully practical—her image lives in you. Her legacy lives in your look.

So, dress with purpose. Walk in legacy. Remember your style is how you honor the women before you and make room for those to come after you.

Below I am sharing with you images of me with my legacy, the people who are watching me and that I hope feel inspired by both what I teach them and the way they observe their mommy show up in the world. I pray I help them to feel confident in finding their own voice and navigating how they will use it to place their stamp on the next generation of our legacy.

Today, I encourage you to:

  • Reflect on a style memory tied to your mother or maternal figure.

  • Wear one thing that reminds you of her.

  • Pass on a style tip to someone else—because legacy continues when we share it.

Happy Mother’s Day!

With Style and Grace,

-Bianca
