Your personal style is more than just clothes—it’s your visual introduction to the world. Whether you're heading into a meeting, showing up on social media, or just walking into a room, Its your first introduction. Finding and owning your personal style is one of the most empowering things you can do—not only for your confidence but also for your personal brand and professional success. But where do you start when you're not sure what your style is?
Let’s break it down with three practical steps to help you discover your personal style—and explore how you can make that style work for you.
“Style is a reflection of your attitude and your personality.” — Shawn Ashmore
1. Pay Attention to What You Feel Your Best In
Start with your closet. What are the pieces you reach for when you want to feel confident, comfortable, or just like yourself? These outfits aren’t random—they’re your instincts giving you clues about what aligns with your identity.
Ask yourself:
What do I wear when I need to feel powerful or polished?
What pieces make me feel the most “me”? Is it a color, a fit, a fabric, or a silhouette that makes the difference?
What do I wear that gives me an instant confidence boost?
Make a mental note. If you really give it some thought, you’ll likely see there is a common thread, even if it's subtle.
2. Look for the Common Thread
Once you've pulled out the clothes that make you feel great, examine them. What do they have in common?
You might find that:
You gravitate toward structured pieces with a tailored fit.
You love bold prints or soft, minimalist neutrals
Everything you love has an element of comfort—stretch, flow, or softness.
Accessories always take center stage in your favorite looks.
This common thread is your style signature— its the language your wardrobe speaks most fluently. Pinpointing it helps you shop with more purpose and clarity and edit your closet with confidence. If you can identify the common thread, you can begin to put words to your style.
3. Build Around Your Power Pieces
Now that you know what you love and why, use those “power pieces” as the foundation for your outfits. If you feel best in a tailored blazer, build multiple looks around it: with jeans for casual days, with wide-leg trousers for presentations, or layered over a dress for events.
Here are some outfit-building tips:
Identify your "go-to" pieces and create at least 3 different outfits around each one. You can stll have variety even if you stick to signature pieces.
Use color palettes that reflect your vibe—warm, cool, bold, or neutral.
Invest in high-quality basics that support your standout items. Spend on staples and save on basics that you can mix and match and save on the basics you can buy again often (think basic tees)
Accessorize strategically—shoes, jewelry, and bags can shift the entire tone of a look.
Why Personal Style Matters for Your Personal Brand
Your style is a key piece of your personal brand—the visual storytelling that sets you apart. Just like a logo or website for a business, your style can communicate:
Confidence and clarity
Creativity and individuality
Attention to detail
Professionalism and authenticity
When your wardrobe reflects your values and vision, people remember you. Whether you're interviewing, networking, presenting, or creating content, showing up with intention in how you look adds credibility and cohesion to how you're perceived.
Final Thoughts: Style is a Tool, Not a Trap
Style isn’t about sticking to a rigid formula or mimicking trends. It’s about using clothing as a tool to express who you are, how you feel, and what you stand for. It can evolve, shift, and grow with you—just like your goals.
So take a little time to notice what feels best, define what that says about you, and use it to build a wardrobe that works for your life and your brand. Know that you can always change your mind. Feel free to try new things!
Because the truth is: fashion like people,is always evolving.
